After a 51 week wait, its Piping Live, as 8,000 pipers and drummers march into Glasgow to enjoy the biggest pipe band festival and the World Pipe Band Championship. Who is going to win the World’s this year?
Field Marshall Montgomery – under Richard Parkes’ direction, the clear favourites, having won the title for the last four years. Current form – beaten by St Lawrence O’Toole at the Scottish Championships held at Dumbarton on 25th July, so no clean sweep for FM this year.
St Lawrence O’Toole – led by PM Alen Tully, who took over from his father, Terry Tully. If St Lawrence O’Toole win the World’s – this will be the first time in recent times, that a father and son have both led a Grade 1 band to victory. Terry Tully picked up the trophy in 2010. They have been getting better through the season.
Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia – PM Ryan Canning and DM Jim Kilpatrick have put together some solid results – and have not been out the top three in the first four major championships. If FM protege – Ryan Canning wins, this will be the first time Richard Parkes will have been beaten by a former band member.
Inveraray & District – Stuart Liddell re-formed the band in 2004 and under his direction the band shot up the grades. The only pipe major of a top-flight grade 1 band who his equally at home on the solo circuit – winning many of the top prizes including the Glenfiddich in 2014. The band started the season well, runners-up to FM, but have slipped at the recent majors.
ScottishPower – led by Chris Armstrong were out the prize list at the first major championship but came back with two fourths at the European and Scottish Championships.
Greater Glasgow Police Scotland – Duncan Nicholson was appointed Pipe Major in 2010 and has been getting steady results with the band, alongside DM Eric Ward. Band didn’t feature in the European Championship prize list, but in the top six at the other three majors.
Simon Fraser University – now led by PM Alan Bevan, the band last won the World’s in 2009 and didn’t compete at this year’s North American Pipe Band Championships. Still likely to be in the prize list again, with 29 talented pipers on their roster and a drum corp led by Reid Maxwell.
