The wealth of Orkney’s Arts & Crafts

Orkney is unique; rich in beauty and cultural heritage, teamed with a hugely energetic and progressive community.  A flourishing place that inspires a wealth of creative designers and artists. Orkney’s stunning landscape and distinct heritage drives many local craftspeople, and it is a place where new ideas are grown, as well as many following in the footsteps of their ancestors keeping the traditional Orkney skills alive.

There is a wide range of crafts in Orkney from jewellery, pottery, ceramics, tapestry, textiles, knitwear, sculpture, carved stone and wood, musical instruments, stained glass, home furnishings and furniture. Many can be found on the Orkney Crafts Association’s Craft Trail.

Orkney Chair

Orkney chairs with the characteristic woven straw hoods. There is a waiting list to have one made by island craftsmen.

Orkney has always inspired artists, both local and visiting.  The island landscape with the clear and ever-changing northern light is the perfect combination to challenge the artist, along with the drama of the crashing waves against breathtaking cliffs.  From the narrow winding streets of it’s towns, Neolithic monuments, to the flowers and birds that make Orkney a natural wonder.

There are a wealth of galleries, artist studios and the renowned Pier Arts Centre in Stromness.
