After 19 years of the NY Tartan Day Parade still no female Grand Marshal

Event News

As a kilt can look equally good on a man or a women, and a large number of women could easily qualify to lead the Tartan Parade it is a surprise that after 19 years the parade committee have yet to secure the services of a female Grand Marshal.

It is not that they are short of potential candidates.  Judy R. Clark, the Scottish designer and ambassador for Harris Tweed; actresses in abundance: Ashley Jensen (Ugly Betty), Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) or Laura Fraser (Breaking Bad), or in music, the incredible voice of Julie Fowlis…the list is certainly ‘as long as my arm’! We will need to wait until the 20th Tartan Day Parade for a female Grand Marshal.

For this year the committee have announced acclaimed actor Tommy Flanagan, born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, will be the Grand Marshal of the 19th Annual New York Tartan Day Parade, which  takes place on Saturday April 8th along 6th Avenue.

The Scotland Run, a popular event that took place during Tartan Week, will not be taking place this year after many successful years being supported by the Scottish Government.

In 2015, Tricia Marwick, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament (2011-2016), accepted the role as Co-Grand Marshal, lets hope in 2018, the 20th year of NY Tartan Parade, a female Scot leads the parade!
